Out of My "Comforter Zone"

We have a guest blogger today: Mary Ryan, our Vice President, has written the following post.
I think I am in good company when I admit that I try to avoid a trip to the hospital (ANY hospital) at all costs. That is until last week when I had the opportunity to meet some new friends and tour the very impressive Seattle Children’s Hospital (SCH) for the first time. The result was eye opening, inspiring, and heartwarming.

Sue H., Dawn K., and Cindy B. have made blanket donations to our guild before and just recently took a batch of new fabrics handed down from our infamous guild member, Lucile N., and like Rumpelstiltskin, turned it into “gold” (or in this case more cheery quilts and blankets for the kids at SCH). These enthusiastic and talented ladies and I met up last week, the first time face to face, and took a tour of SCH. From the moment we set foot in the door at SCH we were greeted by warm and friendly volunteers and staff all eager to show us around.

In the volunteer office, we were given an interesting and informative summary of the how, when, and where our blankets are distributed to patients, then we were off on tour with Directors of Development, Erika K. and Simon P. In just an hour and a half, we were granted up close and personal views of the new ED (Emergency Department), the PICU (Pediatric Intensive Care Unit), the Rooftop Garden, and the Child Life Center.
All along the way we were impressed with the truly caring and compassionate doctors, nurses, and staff. Each one graciously took time to thank us for what we do, and to invite us in to see the environment they have diligently and thoughtfully created, literally from the ground up, to make a safe and child-friendly atmosphere for the patients and their families. Witnessing this first hand only validated all I have heard and read about SCH, the medical expertise of all the people there is apparent and truly exceptional.

I think I can speak for all in our group that toured that day when I say we came away more inspired than ever to continue the mission of Katie’s Comforters Guild with the assurance that we are making a difference. Our blankets give these kids (their families, the staff, and doctors too) one more tool to comfort their fears, help their healing, and hope for better days.

I’m glad I stepped out of my comfort zone to experience this day. I made some wonderful new friends in meeting some of our guild’s fun and talented donors, and even new friends in Erika, Simon, Tony, Ingrid, and Alison at SCH. And while I still have some reservations about visiting hospitals in general, I feel very blessed and fortunate to know that we have one of the best, for all who need it, right here in our own backyard!
Now, back to the sewing table, back in my “comforter zone.” I’ve got blankets to make!
Hugs to All,
Mary
Thank you, Mary, for writing this to share your experiences with us, and a BIG thanks to all who made this visit possible!
