8 New Beauties

Gratitude from a Patient's Mom

We received this note via facebook from Nicole C.:

"I just have to tell you all, keep up the great work! My baby spent her first 9 days in children's hospital and in the NICU she was given a fleece blanket that they lined her bed with, it may seem silly but that blanket made her dad and I's day! It became her lucky blanket and still hangs in her room a year later. We also received a crocheted blanket and a little hat that are equally important to us. It helped us to feel not so alone having others that cared about our little girl. I now make blankets and hats and donate them once a year, I can't wait for my daughter to get old enough to understand what we are doing for other babies and kids and that she was cared for in the same way. Thanks again for caring!"

Lucile and Noble Do it Again

Our beloved guild members and staunch supporters, Lucile & Noble, have done it again: donated 36 beautiful new quilts and blankets to Katie's Comforters Guild for the patients at Seattle Children's Hospital. If you were a sick child, imagine how you would feel when your nurse or child life worker brought one of these cozy, colorful comforters into your room and told you that you could keep it?

Michelle and The Pampered Chef

 Katie's Comforters Guild has been blessed by generous donor.

Michelle Farris is an attorney and mom by day, who loves cooking healthy and nutritious meals for her family. She is also a Pampered Chef representative. Michelle's child received a blanket from Katie's Comforters Guild, and in her gratitude, Michelle wanted to give something back.

She offered to hold a Pampered Chef fundraiser for Katie's Comforters Guild online. Pampered Chef has a great program for this (if you are interested in having one for charity or for yourself, please contact her)! Our guild earned a percentage of the total sales. Thanks to everyone who purchased from the fundraiser!
Michelle also made a generous donation to us of her proceeds. Thank you, Michelle!

Does it Make a Difference? Yes!

Do you ever wonder if what we do at Katie's Comforters Guild at Seattle Children's Hospital makes a difference? Here is the answer, in the words of the mother of a patient.

"Dear Katie's Comforters Guild,

My daughter Mya has been ill for over a year. We have always been able to manage at home. We had a major set back, and she had to be admitted. She had had a very long day from 9 A.M. until 3:30 A.M. We finally made it to the room. She was so scared at the big bed - she [had] never slept in one - and having to stay. When she saw the Minnie Mouse blanket she [lit] up and wrapped up in it and said, 'I OK now Mama. Minnie is with me.'

"I want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for making something very scary [in]to being safe and secure and happy [in] 2 seconds.

I Forgot!

Our dear friend, Mary R. (a guild member and the mother of our junior member, Briana) has agreed to take on the role of "gratitude ambassadress" for our guild. Mary will be writing "thank you" notes and tracking all of the donations our guild recieves in a spread sheet. Thank you, Mary!

Somehow, during the transition between me and Mary, I accepted a donation of blankets from our dear guild member Bev, yet forgot to photograph them, or post about them! ACK - my (very) bad. Thank you, Bev!

The good news is that Mary did not forget to thank Bev. Thanks again, Mary & Bev!

Fleece & Knitting

Last week, our planned "Stitch 'n' Bitch" had to be cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances. Because I had already set the day aside for the activity, I got out the fleece which has been donated and started cutting fringe! I was able to finish 13 fleece blankets for the hospital.

When added to a batch of five fleece blankets made by Cami,

and two knitted blankets from Liberty Bay Books' knitting group,

we were able to donate 20 blankets to the hospital! Our friend (and Seattle Children's Hospital R.N.) Tracie made the delivery for us when she went in to work.

A Gift from Geri

I recently heard from Geri, with whom I went to school when we were young. Though we don't live in the same town anymore, we have found each other online (in addition to the running into one another occasionally). How lovely it was to receive a message from her, saying that she would like to donate to Katie's Comforters Guild. I received her donation this week, and this posting is to say, "Thank you, Geri!"

The inspiration for Katie's Comforters Guild is Katie Gerstenberger, who was a patient at Seattle Children's Hospital. Her blanket from home, made for her by her mother, was a HUGE comfort to her during her treatment for cancer. Our goal is to bring that same comfort to all of the kids in the hospital. Volunteers make quilts and blankets for children at Seattle Children's, and funds raised through this sale will support that mission, and purchase supplies for the handmade quilts.
