Annual Meeting & Luncheon, 2016

Katie's Comforters Guild members Mary, Ellie, Bonnie, Karen & Sue
Five members of Katie's Comforters Guild attended the 2016 Guild Association Annual Meeting & Luncheon celebration at the Westin Hotel on Friday. Four of us drove over together, taking the ferry from Bainbridge Island to Seattle, and one came via the Bremerton ferry. We were seated together for the luncheon, while we watched inspiring videos, listened to personal stories of patient treatment, and heard doctors discuss their research and motivation.
Vice President of our guild, Mary Ryan, and guild member Sue Hart of the Sew-and-Sews
Katie's Comforters Guild President Karen Gerstenberger with guild members Ellie Boren (Katie's "Grandma B") and Bonnie Petersen
Awards were given, gratitude expressed, success celebrated and inspiration was shared all around; tears were shed and applause rang out, culminating in a standing ovation for the featured speaker, Kat Tiscornia - a patient who has taken her own story of cure to the world, in order to inspire others. And inspire she did!

The Guild Association to which we belong had a record-breaking year in 2015. Here are some of the highlights:
  • We have 6,200 members
  • We include 450 guilds
  • 24 new guilds were added in 2015
  • 67 are Research Champion guilds (donating $2,500 or more to research in one calendar year)
  • We gave 125,905 volunteer hours
  • Guilds raised $12,919,100 in project revenue (about half of that was raised by the Friends of Costco Guild - HOORAY for Costco!)
  • $140,200 was raised by membership revenue
  • $602,000 was net Bargain Boutique revenue
  • $20,267,195 was donated to Seattle Children's Hospital Foundation programs in guild-affiliated revenue by guild members and their friends
You can see why our Guild Association is a leader in fundraising, and is admired by hospitals everywhere. Please join us, and come along next year to share in the giving and the celebration - it's fun, educational and rewarding!

In the Words of a Junior Guild Member: Briana

In the words of Briana R., a junior member of our guild:
"In 2010, I joined a local group called Katie’s Comforters Guild (KCG). The guild was started by Karen Gerstenberger after her daughter Katie’s battle with cancer.  Mrs. Gerstenberger had seen how having a special blanket while in the hospital had helped her daughter cope. She decided to help other children like Katie through the comfort of blankets by creating a guild that makes and donates handmade blankets to the Seattle Children’s Hospital.
"A few years after joining the guild, my church youth group was brainstorming community service projects and I immediately thought of KCG.  After some discussion with my youth group leader and my mother, we devised a plan to get the youth group involved. The only stipulation was that I had to convince my peers to participate. I presented the idea of making blankets to them and they unanimously voted it through. Now every year my mom and I prepare fleece fabric; I then demonstrate to my peers the “how to’s” and together we make as many blankets as possible and donate them to the children at Seattle Children’s Hospital. Thank you notes from recipient families affirming the tremendous comfort our blankets bring provide touching testimony to our impact.
"The Gerstenberger’s story inspired me, and I am always seeking out creative ways to help others. My mother was immensely supportive of the idea of joining Katie’s Comforters Guild and first enrolled the two of us as members in 2010. After several years of involvement as individuals in the guild, I saw an opportunity to extend the project and its mission to a wider audience through my church youth group. I felt that its creative nature would appeal to my peers as it did to me, and that the blankets we could make would be an invaluable contribution to the community. There are many concrete ways to tend to those in need but this is a unique project in that its sole intent is to tend to peoples’ spirits.
"When my youth group first announced they were looking for a new community service project, I approached my youth leader with the idea of getting the group involved in making blankets. She approved of the idea and suggested that, as a next step, I present the project to my peers and request their input. Once they voted it in, we discussed dates and my mother and I purchased and prepared the fleece for the blankets. On the appointed date I brought the fabric to the class and explained to my peers how to make the blankets. The finished blankets were then delivered to the hospital. I have led my youth group through this process three times now and so far we have donated 21 cheery blankets to sick children at Seattle Children’s Hospital. Although I am member of the guild, members other than my mother had no role in my activity.
"While my youth group leader assisted with the logistics of the project, the execution and leadership of the project fell to me. The most challenging part of the project was not only convincing the other youth to vote the idea through, but also presenting the entire concept in a way that got through to them and inspired them to overcome their apathy enough to fully commit to and invest themselves in the project and see the difference we could make to the children and their families as they fight their illnesses.
"This project provided a wonderful opportunity for me to grow as a leader and a member of my community. I grew closer to fellow members of my youth group and was amazed to see how, what to us was such a small contribution, had such an immense influence on the patients’ lives. It is one thing to understand in a distant and abstract sense that you are helping someone but it is another to witness it.
"While unfortunately, due to hospital regulations, we are not allowed to personally deliver the blankets to the patients, families occasionally take the time to write to the guild thanking us for the blankets. One family wrote that the blanket their child received “will be a part of her entire childhood” and made their “experience a little brighter.” The youth group has been lucky enough to receive a few such letters and the stories and gratitude of those we help touches us just as much as our blankets touch them. Being a part of that beautiful relationship is truly an honor. But it isn’t because of the letters, or even because of my youth group that I keep making blankets, although those are both incredible aspects of it, I make blankets because I understand how much something to focus on and cling to means in times of such anxiety and pain. It means absolutely everything in that moment, and I would do anything to even just begin to assuage that agony.
"This experience is something that has sculpted the course of my life; I will retain my ties to the guild and continue to spread our message of comfort, generosity and love, in some capacity, for the rest of my life. Being a member of Katie’s Comforters Guild and participating with my youth group has changed both how I see volunteering and how I volunteer.  The project has provided me with a volunteer opportunity to do something, at which I both excel and enjoy, while helping others and growing as a leader. My connection to and love for this project makes it by far the most influential service experience that I have participated in over the years and inspires me to be more emotionally present and invested in current and future volunteer efforts."

Thank you, Briana, for sharing your story with us!

Inspired by Kits: Michelle, Becky & 10 New Quilts

You have read about Michelle F. here; she organizes quilting parties and quilting kits, distributes fabric, inspires others and makes her own quilts, as well. Oh, and she also designed a pattern for us!

Michelle connected with Becky M. and got her started quilting again with one of the kits. Here is a recent note from Becky:
"...I’ve completed 10 quilts for Katie’s Comforters Guild.  I started out with a simple single fabric front and backing, self bound, and progressed into making various simple patchwork designs.  I used to quilt years ago and found that I had forgotten a lot of the math of quilt design, so this is good practice for me.  I’m also excited to have such a worthwhile cause to use up the yards and yards of fabrics that I’ve accumulated over the years!
I have found so many good resources for project ideas and tutorials on line!  Here are a couple of my favorites:
This is a cute blog as well as pictures of patchwork quilts from a very prolific quilter!  She has some great tutorials, too. http://sewpreetiquilts.blogspot.com
Another site that I’ve found some wonderful, colorful ideas is one called cluckclucksew.   She has a tutorial for an amazingly simple self binding with a mitered corner that I’m using now.  It works every time!  http://www.cluckclucksew.com/2014/01/binding-quilt-with-quilt-back.html
I’m going to drop off the completed quilts at Childrens Hospital this week. I’ll be sure to give you credit for the kits that got me started!" - Becky M
Here is a photo of Becky's beautiful quilts:
Thank you, Becky and Michelle! Your time, talent and materials keep us going and GROWing - and keep the patients at Seattle Children's Hospital in comfort!

12 Quilts + 4 Pillows from Bonnie

Bonnie and I planned to meet this week for a hand-off of quilts and pillows. Bonnie kindly accepted the challenge of taking donated fabric rectangles (from our friend Stacy's local "Buy Nothing" site  - you may have seen these free, open exchanges on facebook) and making them into something for patients to use and enjoy. She came up with the idea of pillows:
In addition to the darling pillows, Bonnie donated 12 of her one-of-a-kind, custom-made quilts:
She thinks of all ages and interests.
Here is a detail, showing Bonnie's talent for quilting stitches

Michelle F. Hosts a Sewing Party

Michelle Farris has a way of gathering and empowering others. She is a great supporter of our guild with her own sewing, and she invites and includes friends and acquaintances who sew - and those who don't know how - to join her. She is a willing and able teacher. Michelle can even design patterns - she designed one for Katie's Comforters Guild!

When we receive donations of fabric, I often turn to Michelle and ask if she needs any of it. A few weeks back, we met for a fabric hand-off in Seattle. She then hosted an event, which produced the following quilts and blankets:
...which she then took the time to deliver to Seattle Children's Hospital.

Thank you, Michelle,
for your generous donations of
time, talent, teaching and materials!

Mickie Farris Donates 3 Quilts

I had the pleasure of meeting Mickie Farris in Seattle for a quilt and fabric "swap" this week. Mickie is a quilter who is adept at machine- and hand-quilting. She is a great supporter of Katie's Comforters Guild by making quilts, and is adept at bringing others into the loop to sew for us. You might recall seeing her brilliantly simple pattern example here on our blog.

Mickie donated three lovely quilts for the hospital: two of her own making (thanks for modeling them, Owen!)
and one made by a friend.
Close-up of one of the squares, with quilting stitches visible
Mickie also took home eight quilt tops which were donated to our guild, and she is going to finish them. HOORAY! I gave her some fabric to help with the finishing.

We have more quilt tops and fabric, if you are interested in quilting for Katie's Comforters Guild. Please leave a message here, or on our facebook page, and I'll be happy to get in touch with you.

Thank you for your help and support, Mickie!
We appreciate you (and your friends), and all that you do!

Invitation from the SOVREN Guild

We received the following invitation from the SOVREN Guild:
Share our dream…vintage racing to benefit Seattle Children’s Hospital The SOVREN Guild is presenting a unique opportunity for your guild to participate in a fundraising event where 100% of funds raised and matching money earned by your guild’s efforts, will be allocated to your area of special interest at Seattle Children’s and your guild will receive soft credit in the hospital’s Annual Report. On Friday, June 19th, we will be presenting the 6th Annual PNW Karting Challenge at PGP Motorsports Park located at Pacific Raceways in Kent, Washington. The event fields 25 karting teams, each consisting of 4 drivers and as many supporters as possible. The race is catered to the new drivers as well as experienced kart drivers. The cost of registration, which covers the cost of kart & track rental, staffing and insurance is $250 per team.

Donations for your team’s efforts are raised from business associates, friends and family...Donations can be sought for laps completed within the 2 hour time frame or a flat pledge to the team. We can help each team set up their own online donation account through RAZOO, which makes it easy for drivers, guild members and supporters to email friends and/or business acquaintances letting them know of your guild’s participation in the race and how they can donate to your team online. Team drivers do not have to be guild members but could be spouses, children, grandchildren or friends. The only restrictions are that they are at least 15 years old and 5 feet tall and before the race, have some experience driving a kart. But, we make that easy too with special pricing and help, from the staff at PGP Motorsports Park, to get both experience and to qualify….give them a call at (253) 639-7223 (RACE) and let them know that you are participating in the Seattle Children’s karting race on the 19th.

The most exciting news for guilds is that through our generous matching sponsor, Jackson Dean Construction, we have $20,000 of matching funds available and each team has the opportunity to add to their earned donations. For the first 15 teams to raise $1000 in donations, Jackson Dean will donate an additional $1000 to their team’s funding focus. The next 5 teams to reach $2000 (Prior Jackson Dean matching donation $ not included in this total.) will receive an additional $1000. After the race is concluded, SOVREN Guild will allocate whatever your team has earned (including any matches) to your area of special interest. All Karting Challenge donations will flow through the SOVREN Guild and on to the Guild Association in your guild’s name. One more piece of late breaking news is that an anonymous sponsor has offered to add $250 to the fundraising efforts of the first 12 teams to register and sign up for online fundraising through Razoo (please see instructions attached.)…what a great way to quickly get to the minimum fundraising level of $500!

32 New Quilts & Blankets and a Gift of Funds

Last week, Lucile and Noble stopped into Poulsbo on their way to run errands. They brought with them 32 new quilts and fleece blankets! The variety of fabric, colors and patterns is a delight.
Lucile has a way of combining fabric which is very creative. Not only does she make her own quilt binding when necessary, she makes quilted blankets special by combining solids with patterns. She also applies this concept to fleece. When we receive donations of solid-colored fleece, Lucile adds fun to the design by sewing solid pieces to patterned fleece, using her sewing machine's decorative stitches, and creating an embroidered border around the edges. You can see what I mean here:
Thank you, Lucile and Noble!

Loyal guild member Ellie Boren does not sew, but is faithful in her financial support of our work; once again, she sent a gift which will help us to purchase fabric and other supplies (such as satin blanket binding and batting) for our guild members who do sew.
Thank you, Ellie & husband Phil!

Gifts from Near and Far

On Saturday evening, we hosted a gathering of local friends, and one of them (Angela) brought a soft, lovely baby blanket which she had knitted; what a treat it will be for the patient, and for the parents of a sick child. This is a busy friend with a full-time job and three children, so we appreciate what a gift of love and time it is!
Thank you, Angela!

Just this morning, another friend -Nan, also a mother with three active, growing kids - posted this photo on facebook:
This batch of five blankets was made by her daughter, Ava (a talented ballerina).

Ava's brother was treated for cancer when he was young, and he is not only in remission, but has grown into a talented musician; we rejoice with their family in his healing. The family moved from the West Coast to Colorado, so Nan will be shipping Ava's blankets to the hospital all the way from there - another act of generosity.
Thank you, Ava and Nan!

These gifts of warmth, softness and exuberant color will cheer the hearts of all who receive them.

Fleece Blankets from Yelm Middle School

We received the following message from Bethany M., of Yelm Middle School:
"We did a much better job of timing fabric sales this year, involved about 55 students from the 7th grade and 9th grade leadership classes (Jen N. and Laurel R.'s classes), and made 29 fleece blankets to donate to Children's through the guild.  Jen took some of them up on Thursday and I will drop off 13 fleece blankets and two quilts tomorrow.  I think we still will have one more trip with the rest of the blankets.

"We did not coordinate a picture of all the blankets and kids this time around, but I attached pictures for the 13 blankets that will go up with me tomorrow."
Here are the photos of the 13 fleece blankets mentioned above:
Thank you, Bethany, Jen, Laurel and all of your students from Yelm Middle School for this generous gift of 29 fleece blankets and 2 quilts to patients at Seattle Children's Hospital!
A gift from kids to kids is especially meaningful, blessing both the giver and receiver in special ways.
Reminder: our guild welcomes kids as Junior Members!

A Dozen Originals from Bonnie P.

Bonnie P.  is a quilter of great talent. She carefully creates richly-colored, cheery, heirloom-quality quilts for Katie's Comforters to donate to Seattle Children's Hospital's patients. In addition to making her original creations, Bonnie generously helps us resolve fabric questions and other issues. Her talents are many, and she shares them generously.
Here is her latest dozen
...and close-ups of them, including views of front and back, and Bonnie's beautiful quilting stitches...

Michelle (Mickie) and 11 New Quilts

Michelle (a.k.a. Mickie) is an avid quilter. She not only does her own quilting, she encourages others to join her and has organized gatherings and created a wonderful, simple pattern for those who want to make a quilt for our guild. If you'd like a copy of it, send a message to me and I will email it to you.

Mickie often donates her quilts to Seattle Children's Hospital through Katie's Comforters Guild. Last week, we received a message on facebook that she had made and delivered 11 new quilts to the hospital. She shared these photos (and gave permission for me to re-post):
Thank you so much for your support, Mickie!
We are grateful to you and your family for all you do to bring comfort to patients at Seattle Children's Hospital!

Lucile and Noble Donate AGAIN!

Lucile and Noble are our most steadfast, regular donors. I have never met a couple in their 90s with more energy, vim and vigor. They are so smart, hardworking and sharp that they inspire me with a fantastic example to follow - if I get to live into my 90s!

I stopped by their house on Monday to deliver the roll of batting which we purchased with Ellie and Phil's donation (see the posting below this one). When I did that, they donated 13 more blankets and quilts - 10 fleece and 3 quilts.

Here are the fleece blankets:
and here are the quilts.
Due to supply issues, we have not been able to help Lucile purchase satin blanket binding, so - ever-resourceful - she is making her own binding out of cotton! Check it out:
Thank you, Lucile and Noble! You are wonderful members of - and friends to - our Guild!

Thank You, Ellie & Phil!

We have a wonderful group of Guild members and friends who have a variety of gifts and talents which they share with us. Some of them knit, some crochet, some sew, some cut fleece into blankets, and some donate funds. Those funds are very important, as we use them to purchase materials and to ship fabric to those who will convert raw materials into quilts of comfort.
Ellie helping with a quilt delivery at SCH with Child Life worker Julie and KCG President, Karen
Ellie is a Guild member who has been a supporter from the very beginning. She and her husband Phil provide donations from time to time, and they just sent another one. We used it to purchase a huge roll of batting with which to make quilts, and to ship fabric to a Guild member who lives in another part of the state. This gift is every bit as important as the gifts of sewing, knitting, crocheting and cutting fleece.

We always need donations of time, talent, materials and funds to help us continue our work. Whichever is your favorite way to donate, we appreciate you and we thank you!
Thanks, Ellie & Phil!

St. Olaf's Youth Group

On Sunday, I had the privilege of visiting St. Olaf's Catholic Church to make a presentation to the youth group. St. Olaf's is in Poulsbo, our hometown, and they have been supporting Katie's Comforters Guild for a few years now, making and donating warm fleece blankets for patients through the inspiration of one of their members: Briana. Briana is our one junior guild member - and we'd love to have more like her!

I made a tri-fold presentation board and mounted photo collage pages on it (mentioned in a previous posting). I included information about guild membership, as well as about Katie's endowment and the progress in cancer research and treatment since her passing. I brought Katie's own comforter with me so that they could see how much love a blanket gets in the hospital.
We took photos together, and then they got to work, making another batch of fleece blankets to donate.
