Generous Offer of Quilt Top Help!

For those of you in need of quilting help, here is a wonderful offer from Mary F. in North Seattle:
I have a long arm Tin Lizzie quilting machine and sew a lot of quilts myself.  If someone wants to bring over a few tops and help me get them onto the Tin Lizzie, we could finish them quickly. My work style is a bit simple as I am not a professional on the Tin Lizzie but I got it because I like to piece more than quilt as well.  This helps me get projects done and onto beds.  I could do this 2 or 3 times a year.  I am a member of Quilter's Anonymous. - Mary F., Seattle WA 98115
We have a few beautiful quilt tops here which would benefit from Mary's kind offer. If you would like to contact Mary to ask for help in finishing your quilts, please leave a message here or on our Facebook page, and we will put you in touch with her!

Thank you, Mary!

Service Project Yields 396 Blankets - #AWSL2015

Coach Jamie, the chairmen of #AWSL2015 and results of their service project
On Saturday, Gregg and I traveled to Puyallup (in case you're not local, that's pronounced pyew-all-up) High School, through a driving rainstorm the likes of which we rarely see, even here in Western Washington. I had been invited, through a message sent to Katie's Comforters Guild's Facebook page, to address the 2015 Fall Leadership Conference of the Association of Washington Student Leaders. This wonderful group of high school students and advisors from all around the state gathers annually to learn and grow, and then take what they have gained back to enrich their local school communities through their skills and passion for student leadership.

The theme of the conference this year was "We Over ME," modeled on some of the motivational concepts of the Seattle Seahawks (#WhyNotUs, #AllIn, #MakeThemNotice). They asked me to speak to them on Day Two of the three-day conference (theme: "Why Not You?"), before they began their annual service project. The service project they chose was making blankets for Katie's Comforters Guild at Seattle Children's Hospital! Each school represented had collected fleece for the project, and sent it along with its delegates to the conference. Coach Jamie, advisor to the conference's hosting team, wanted to help all of the students really connect with, and understand, the power and purpose of what they were about to do (which is why she asked me to speak).

As the name AWSL suggests, their programs include a huge emphasis on developing leadership skills; what may not be apparent (until you attend the conference) is the joy, fun, energy and freedom-within-structure that is part of the organization. I felt it as soon as the students began to gather in the gymnasium; it was like a pep rally for human potential.

I had prepared a short speech and sent photographs of the Guild's work to Coach Jamie. I packed two of Katie's own comforters to bring along with me. I prayed and listened, wrote what came naturally, and felt that everything was ready to go when I went to bed the night before the event.

I awoke early Saturday morning with an inner knowing that I needed to re-write the speech.

In the wake of recent school shootings, I felt moved to speak to the group about the power of simple presence, of helping others to know that they are not alone, of knowing that we are not helpless in the face of tragedy. I sat down at my laptop and the words poured out of me, just as they needed to do, by Grace.

When we arrived in Puyallup, we were warmly welcomed. The "Varsity Team" (conference chairs Kelty, Nicholas and Kenton) introduced me to the crowd: hundreds of energetic students who were sitting on bleachers in the gym. Then the lights were turned down and a spotlight focused on me, so I could see only my notes. After sharing my message, there was a huge outpouring of love and gratitude from the students. They stood and clapped, lined up to hug me and offer their personal "thanks," briefly told me their stories of connection to Seattle Children's Hospital or to someone with cancer, and then they departed to make blankets in teams.

Gregg and I were taken on a tour of the school by the conference chairs, meeting and taking photographs with some of the teams as they worked. Classrooms, hallways, cafeteria tables - there were students cutting and tying fleece everywhere we went. It was a thrill to see.
This is what love-made-visible looks like
After an hour had passed, we were called back into the gym so that the results could be reviewed and tallied. Again, the bleachers filled with student-energy. Imagine our surprise when the total came in at
396 blankets!

It was hard to hold back the tears as the students admired the immediate results of their teamwork: nearly 400 blankets of all shapes, sizes, and colors of the rainbow. They asked me to sit for photos and continued to thank me, with applause and chanting, but I want to thank them, because they made this idea of a miracle become a reality. {If you are a user of Instagram, go to #AWSL2015 to see the student delegates' postings.}

To Jamie, Kelty, Kenton and Nicholas,
to every student member and advisor of AWSL,
to every school which sent delegates,
Thank you!
I am overwhelmed by your generosity of spirit, and inspired by each one of you!
Our schools, state and country will be in good hands under your leadership.

Thank you, Bethany!

Bethany M. met us a couple of weeks ago for a hand-off of donated fleece fabric.
You might remember Bethany as the teacher from Yelm Middle School, whose students have made and donated fleece blankets for our guild.* She made the drive up to Gig Harbor, which was a good half-way point between us.

Here is Bethany with the fabric in her car, ready to transport it:
Thank you, Bethany, and Yelm Middle School staff and students, for sharing your time and talent to bring comfort to sick children! Your help is essential to our work!

*If you are a student or staff member of a school or community group, and are looking for a service project, please contact us - we'd love to have your help!

A Visit to Lucile & Noble: 30 New Quilts & Fleece

On Monday, Mary (our fearless Vice President) and I took a little road trip across the Hood Canal Bridge to see Lucile and Noble. Lucile had made 30 new quilts and fleece blankets for Katie's Comforters Guild, and we had some lovely new fabric (donated by Kris via Cindy and David W.) to give to her.

Lucile & Noble gave Mary a tour of their cozy home, showcasing examples of Lucile's many talents in needlework and crafts. She has mastered embroidery, cross stitch and mixed media over the years.

Here is a photo showing some of her latest batch of quilts:
Upon returning to our hometown, I went straight over to Tracie's house (Tracie is a Seattle Children's Hospital R.N.), and she loaded all 30 quilts and blankets into her car. She delivered them that very evening on her way to her shift in the ICU. Tracie often provides this selfless service for our guild.

Thank you, Lucile & Noble,
Mary,
and Tracie!
Your time and talent bring comfort and healing to patients and families at Seattle Children's Hospital,
and we appreciate you!

St. Olaf's Youth Group

On Sunday, I had the privilege of visiting St. Olaf's Catholic Church to make a presentation to the youth group. St. Olaf's is in Poulsbo, our hometown, and they have been supporting Katie's Comforters Guild for a few years now, making and donating warm fleece blankets for patients through the inspiration of one of their members: Briana. Briana is our one junior guild member - and we'd love to have more like her!

I made a tri-fold presentation board and mounted photo collage pages on it (mentioned in a previous posting). I included information about guild membership, as well as about Katie's endowment and the progress in cancer research and treatment since her passing. I brought Katie's own comforter with me so that they could see how much love a blanket gets in the hospital.
We took photos together, and then they got to work, making another batch of fleece blankets to donate.

Lucile & Noble's Latest 30

Last week, I had the fun of introducing Lucile and Noble to my mother for the first time. Lucile and Noble are so inspiring to all of us, and as a fellow guild member, my mom had been wanting to meet them. It was a treat for everyone. It was also exciting to see what they had brought with them:
30 new quilts and blankets!
I would have liked to take all of these out of their bags and photographed them to show you, but I have pulled a muscle in my back and cannot do tasks like that for the next week or so. You'll have to imagine them.

Lucile and Noble amaze me with their generosity and work ethic. Lucile always says, "I've got to keep busy!" Remember, she is in her 90s, with Noble nearly 90 himself. What a wonderful example of a productive, happy, healthy marriage partnership and retirement!

Thank you, Lucile and Noble!
Next time, I hope to be able to show off all of your handiwork (after my back heals).

Donations and the "Economy of Grace"

I often say that Katie's Comforters Guild operates on an "economy of Grace." This is evident when we hear from people "out of the blue," who decide to donate their stash of fabric, or gather a group to sew, or send a check to our guild to help us purchase supplies. I always love to see it happen, and it just did.

I received a request for help from a teacher who I've never met, who would like to have her class make blankets to donate through Katie's Comforters Guild. I asked our treasurer to check our bank balance, and it was a bit low. I was just wondering how to respond to the request, when a friend donated a check "out of the blue," for the exact amount I had hoped to send to the class. Thank you, Mary Kay, for being part of our economy of Grace! Because of her generosity, I was able to buy a gift card at a fabric store, which the class will turn into fleece blankets for Katie's Comforters Guild!

And again: our friend Cami just dropped off 11 beautiful fleece blankets for the guild to donate. Here they are:
There are 11 blankets made from 8 different patterns of fleece

Thank you, Cami! Your gift of cheerful, lightweight blankets is perfect for spring and summer hospital stays. The kids and their families will love them.
